FEI students triumph in international drone competition in Vietnam
Students of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics of VŠB – Technical University Ostrava took home the bronze medal from Vietnam. Nine teams from five universities took part in the competition, including three from Vietnam and two from the Czech Republic.
The international competition focused on drone research and design and was held at Ton Duc Thang University (TDTU) in Ho Chi Minh City. “The competition not only promotes interest in scientific research in this field, but also develops international cooperation,” said Dr Tran Trong Dao, rector of the university.
FEI was represented in Vietnam by the Propellers team consisting of Václav Janus, David Trojek and Robert Šamárek. The students have spent the last few weeks preparing for the competition: programming, designing, printing on 3D printers, building hardware, debugging software and training intensively. “The competition is a unique opportunity to show not only technical skills, but also the ability to collaborate and solve complex problems in real time,” recalls Radek Martinek, Vice Dean for Science and Research at FEI, who is also the team’s coach.
What was the most difficult moment for the students in the competition? “The first game was really tough. We had to get used to balls popping out of the goals because we were flying over the legal limit. But it paid off and we didn’t record any fouls,” says team captain Václav Janus. The Propellers team went on to beat the students of UTB Zlín in the third place match. “We are very satisfied, the competition was great. Teams from TDTU, which took the first two places, had a long preparation. However, we didn’t let ourselves get discouraged and thanks to the steady hands of our pilot we won the bronze,” Janus added.
The international drone competition will continue next year, with the next edition taking place at VŠB-TUO in June.
